Different Methods of Access Control for Automated Gates

Access control systems are an indispensable part of the security gate's automation. Whether you’re trying to decide on remote controls, keypad/card reader or telephone entry access, there many things to be considered which will dictate the right access control system to choose from.  A few important items to think about is how you and others are accessing your property, how often you use the gate, how the gate opens, etc.Since you will have to live with your gate for many years, it is important to give this decision some thought. Depending on the level of security and privacy that you want, you may want to choose from several different methods for allowing access into your property. Each access option has its benefits and challenges which are outlined below.

Remote Control Access
The most common way to activate an automated gate is with a remote control. When the remote control is pressed, it transmits a signal to a receiver which is usually installed inside the gate operator. Once activated, the gate opens.  This type of entry is good for any kind of gate owner. They are great for both commercial and private use, and are relatively easy to maintain and very cost effective. Replacement remotes can generally be found at big box hardware stores, so even repair or replacement is convenient. The only potential problem that is specific to this entry system is that the remotes can be stolen, so if security is your main concern, you may want to go with another option.  Remote entry systems remain the most popular type of automatic gate opener on the market.

Automated Gate Card Readers
This method is very popular with commercial clients such as apartment buildings and multifamily complexes. With this type of system, a chip is built into a card. To open the gate, the card must be either swiped or held up against a card reader. The reader recognizes the card and opens the gate for entry. Compared to other access methods, magnetic card readers are the simplest and easy to use which allow for a slightly quicker entry along with more security. This makes it the ideal access solution when a large number of vehicles need to enter a site. This method eliminates the need for batteries which can be a problem with remote entry systems.  The reason why it is more secure than clickers is because each card has a number and facility code which is location specific to the property.  The individual in charge of handing out the cards should be keeping track and recording in a log as to who has what card.  This type of access still requires you to hand out or pass around cards which can be stolen or cloned, but at least you will know what card and/or person it is related to so that you can narrow it down and remove it from the system.

Keypad Access
Keypad Systems are the best solution for pedestrian access, which allow guests to enter only if they know the appropriate code. The gate is connected to a box with a numeric  keypad that has the ability to hold a number of codes. The upside is that the gate is programmed to only open if a specific code is entered. The downside is that it requires memorizing a code.If the code is given out to too many people, you may run the risk of having issues and may want to change the code from time to time.

Telephone Entry Access
This is generally the most popular and secure option for larger communities because human communication is required. When using a telephone entry system, people have the ability to scroll through a call box which is housed in front of the community.  The call box lists each resident and their respective telephone numbers so that if you want to gain access, you would have to call the resident and have them press a button on their phone for entry.  Another added feature is the ability to combine it with a security camera, which allows even more levels of privacy and security. It is sometimes more convenient to use a telephone entry so that your visitors without remote controls can be granted access. Having a call box simply means you are able to effortlessly communicate with the person or people at your gates and have the ability to choose to open the gates from a remote location.
