How To Choose The Most Effective Access Control System For Your Unique Needs
Is your business still using an antiquated
security system? If you think you are living in the past, chances are you are
probably right. With technology changing
so rapidly, it’s hard to keep pace with what is out there and what is no longer
acceptable. As different options become available, it’s important to know what
the differences are and how they apply to your needs. The security systems outlined below are
important for many industries and businesses regardless of size.
1. Door/Elevator
Controls
For high-end residential condo’s or
governmental agencies, a common type of access control feature ties into the
elevator system. A special elevator access control unit is installed and used
to determine the floors that can be reached based on the access control
credential. Your card or fob can be customized based on the floor or department
you have access to. For example, if you work for the accounting department and
it is situated on the 2nd floor, you will only be given access to the 2nd floor
and nothing else. Similarly, if you live
on the 30th floor, you will only have access to that floor and
nothing else besides the lobby/garage.
2. Barrier
Gates
If you are looking to control unwanted
visitors, the first line of defense is typically a gate system of some
kind. Security barriers and automated gate systems are integral parts of an automated electronic security system’s access
control solutions. The presence of security barriers and gates provides
protection from access of unauthorized personnel to your premises.
3. Card
Readers
Large offices and industrial complexes
typically use a card access system as one form of access control. The modern
card reading systems are electronic devices that can read plastic cards or fobs
embedded with a computer chip, barcode or magnetic strip. There are other more complex systems capable
of providing additional layers of security, but the most common for this type
of application are offices.
4. Telephone
Entry System
Most residential and multi-family
communities prefer this type of access control system. In this case, a telephone entry system is installed
at the entrance of the community and is the communication device that links the
resident to the visitor. Typically, it
is installed in conjunction to a gate (or entrance door to a building) where
visitors can call the office and request entry. Most telephone entry systems
have a keypad to enter codes to open the gate or keep it open for longer
periods of time.
5. RFID
Systems
RFID security systems or radio frequency
identification system is a technology-based identification system that helps to
identify objects as they pass by, typically on vehicles via the tags attached
to them. Most high-end gated communities
use this type of access where they do not want the residents to stop and open
their windows or slow down to present any type of credential. The seamless transaction and ease of use make
this most desirable to luxury communities.
