New Year, New Security Opportunities
As 2018 slowly approaches, many of us take
some time to reflect on the past and evaluate how the year went. Did the goals we set at the beginning of the
year come to fruition or were we left deferring those goals to the following
year? In the security industry, it is no
different. We have noticed common trends
that start out with minimal traction only to gain momentum as time goes
on. Most professionals benchmark these
unique opportunities and try to forecast its presence throughout the year. 2017 showed the emergence of more state of the
art “smart technologies”, and we at Royce don’t see that changing. The following list are the top 3 emerging trends
in the smart technology field that we should look out for in 2018.
1.
Mobile Credentials
The security industry is becoming increasingly complex with more options available in terms of access control systems and mobility. As more individuals move away from old antiquated phones and utilize the capabilities of smartphones, they are now able to access the many features a security and access control system offers. Using a smartphone as a form of credential is a practical option and can completely replace the use of an ID card. No longer do individuals need to purchase the physical copy, instead, they can download an application and get verified via a secure e-mail from the company. The benefit of this is not only does this save time and money, but the ease of use and peace of mind is invaluable.

The landscape for video surveillance and CCTV camera security systems has changed dramatically within the past year. While high-definition cameras have become cheaper with more models readily available, many manufacturers are looking to incorporate additional incentives in order to stand out from their competitors. We are seeing more companies offering mobile applications for smart phones which will allow the end user to customize the way they view their system. It is with these added features that make the systems more personal to its users which in turn facilitate certain companies to stand out. We intend to see more features emerge via the mobile application platform which will likely catapult the entire CCTV camera market to the forefront.
3.
Biometrics
While the term biometrics has been around
for a while, if you ask most people what that means they would say that it has
something to do with high-security and the CIA.
While this is certainly true for the most part, biometrics is getting
wider usage in professional security applications as well. Apple has already incorporated biometrics by
using the ability to recognize your fingerprint or even facial features in
order to unlock your phone. Look out for
more developments and usage capabilities in the near future.
As technology continues to progress at a
rapid pace, it will be interesting to see where we are at by the end of 2018 in
regard to the smart technologies and the many new features available.
